Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership

H2FCP is the nation's leading collaboration of government and industry leaders building a thriving #hydrogen economy through zero-emission mobility.

“Drivers kept this network alive this spring,” said Bill Elrick, Executive Director of H2FCP. “They checked SOSS before every trip, they waited in line, and they kept fueling. That is the backbone of this industry, and I'm grateful for it. I'm just as grateful for the station operators, fuel suppliers, automakers, and agency staff who worked through the disruption to bring stations back online. Our members build the network, and drivers prove it works. Thank you to all of them.”

The drivers have done their part. The #hydrogen network needs to grow, and growing it takes all of us. Learn more about membership at https://t.co/Rx3R5PXk6b.

Beyond industry leadership and education, H2FCP's primary contribution to #hydrogen drivers is one tool: SOSS, our real-time Station Operational Status System.

Drivers check SOSS before heading to a station. Operators use it to report outages. State agencies and Low Carbon Fuel Standard reporting participants rely on it too, and third-party map apps pull SOSS data into their own platforms. We're now in the process of further upgrades and modernizations to make the tool even faster and more dependable.

Everything else drivers depend on, from the dispenser to the delivery truck to the codes and standards that make a fill safe, is built by our members: vehicle manufacturers, station developers, fuel producers, transit agencies, and policymakers who've worked together since H2FCP was founded in California in 1999.

Why do drivers choose #hydrogen? The reasons are practical, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center: fill up in less than five minutes, get more than 300 miles of range, and produce zero tailpipe emissions.

The vehicles on the road back that up. Toyota's 2026 Mirai has an EPA-estimated range of 402 miles and comes with up to $15,000 in complimentary hydrogen, an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on fuel cell components, and 21 days of complimentary rental car use during the first three years.

Honda's CR-V e:FCEV, America's first production plug-in hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, combines a U.S.-made fuel cell module with plug-in charging for around-town driving and hydrogen for longer trips. It has a 270-mile EPA-estimated range and a fuel card worth up to $15,000 over a three-year lease. Hyundai's second-generation NEXO refuels in about five minutes and delivers up to 826 km (about 513 miles) of range on Europe's WLTP test cycle: https://t.co/rj82E03uac

There is still time to submit nominations for the Center for Hydrogen Safety's (CHS) third annual Robert Zalosh Hydrogen Safety Excellence Awards.

The international awards honor individuals, organizations, and projects that have made outstanding contributions to advancing #hydrogen safety. It recognizes those driving positive change and improving safety practices across the hydrogen industry.

“When we started expanding beyond California, we knew we needed #hydrogen partners who understood their regions as well as we understand ours,” said Bill Elrick, Executive Director of H2FCP. “RHA has spent years building relationships with utilities, tribes, labor, and project developers across the Pacific Northwest. Formalizing this partnership means both RHA and H2FCP members benefit from that work.”

Before this year’s fuel supply disruption, California's hydrogen network was on a two-year upward climb. CARB's 2025 Annual Evaluation found average network availability improving from 58 percent in Q2 2024 to 74 percent in Q2 2025, and H2FCP's own SOSS data showed monthly availability above 90 percent by the end of 2025.

That progress came from station operators investing in upgraded equipment, added staffing, and backup systems: the same operators who spent this spring bringing stations back online.

The build-out hasn't stopped. Chevron opened its third California hydrogen station in Carson in February 2026. Our tracker counts 106 retail stations in development statewide, plus 4 heavy-duty truck stations in operation.

In August, the California Energy Commission approved $15 million for hydrogen refueling, and in September, California joined Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Baja California in committing to the BC2BC Zero-Emission Vehicle Corridor.
