Safe to say the team did not keep it “6-7” after bringing home a Gold and a Silver at the EPIC Awards this year. 🏆
We’re delighted to share that CACTUS was recognized with:
🥇Gold for SmartScreen by Paperpal Preflight for our work with Wolters Kluwer, helping publishers and authors identify language, technical compliance and structural gaps before manuscripts enter peer review helping reduce avoidable delays and improve submission readiness from the start.
🥈 Silver for the AGU Author Video Series by CACTUS Digital Media Solutions for our work with AGU, recognized in the Voices of Discovery category for transforming complex scientific research into engaging, accessible, story-driven video content designed to help research connect with wider audiences.
These recognitions represent months of collaboration, problem-solving, reviews, revisions and creative thinking from teams that genuinely care about improving publishing workflows and helping research more accessible, engaging and impactful.
Very proud of the teams behind both these wins.
P.S. For everyone about to Google what “6-7” means: it basically just means acting chill and unbothered… which the team obviously couldn’t do after the wins.🤪

They say- a lot can happen in a year. To that we say- Don't we know it!😄
Over the past year, we partnered with publishers, universities, research organizations and national initiatives across the world to solve challenges across research and scholarly publishing.
We worked on improving editorial workflows, strengthening research integrity checks, expanding access to AI-powered research tools and supporting authors throughout the publication journey. Every collaboration brought new ideas, new learning and new opportunities to build better systems together.
Some partnerships focused on making processes faster and more efficient. Others focused on helping research become more accessible, discoverable and easier to communicate.
We’re grateful to every partner who collaborated with us this year and trusted us to build alongside them. We’re genuinely very grateful to be part of a community that constantly pushes us to think bigger, do better and keep raising the bar for what this industry can achieve together.🥂
As we head to #SSP2026, this felt like the right time to look back at the partnerships, conversations, and collaborations that shaped our year.

America’s Finest City is about to host some of CACTUS’ finest minds at the SSP 48th Annual Meeting in San Diego.
As publishing continues to navigate increasing scale, accelerating AI adoption and growing pressure on editorial systems, the conversation is no longer just about efficiency. The real challenge lies in building workflows that remain reliable, accountable and genuinely useful for the people working within them.
That is the perspective Team CACTUS will be bringing to #SSP2026 this year across conversations on research integrity, peer review, AI implementation and research visibility.
We are also looking forward to Christopher Leonard’s industry breakout session, Technically Sound, Personally Useless: Fixing the Last Mile of Peer Review, on May 27th from 3:00 to 3:30 PM, where the discussion will examine the growing gap between systems that work technically and systems that work meaningfully in practice.
This is your invitation to stop by Booth 106. We’ll be there with plenty of chocolates, merch, endless publishing conversations and most likely a few selfies too.

Attracting submissions is only half the job. What happens after that is where the real work begins.
In our recent episode of Insights Xchange, Nikesh Gosalia was in conversation with Oliver Cocks from Springer Nature, discussing why content retention is becoming a critical strategy in scholarly publishing.
As submission volumes grow, the focus often stays on acquisition, but retention is what shapes the author experience, determines whether strong research stays within a journal ecosystem and ultimately influences long-term performance. It is also where many of the real challenges sit. Rejections, transfers, communication gaps and fragmented workflows can turn what should be a structured process into a frustrating one for authors.
The question is not just how to attract good research but how to handle it better once it arrives. How do we create journeys that are more connected, more transparent and more aligned with what authors actually need?

Supporting efforts that strengthen research integrity is work we care deeply about.
We’re glad to have provided pro bono support to the World Conferences on Research Integrity, contributing structured, peer review assistive checks to support the conference’s abstract evaluation process.
As Chris Graf noted, the effort brought together the CACTUS team’s expertise alongside the valuable contributions of peer reviewers, reinforcing the importance of collective input in maintaining quality and rigor.
Reflecting on this, Akhilesh Ayer shared that our role focused on complementing the evaluation process with structured checks, while Nikesh Gosalia highlighted a belief we strongly stand by that research integrity scales best when expert judgment is supported by consistent, evidence-based insights.
We’re also looking forward to continuing these conversations in person. Next week, Nikesh Gosalia and Shilpi Mehra will be at #WCRI2026, where we’ll be presenting two posters and engaging with the community. If you’re attending, please feel free to connect with us.

A proud moment for us, and a meaningful one for India’s AI journey.
We have been empaneled by the National e-Governance Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, as a partner agency to provide specialized AI/ML expertise for national digital initiatives.
As the Viksit Bharat vision gains momentum, the focus is shifting from exploring AI to putting it to work. In this role, CACTUS will support ministries and departments in building and operationalizing AI systems that are practical, reliable, and designed for scale.
It’s a step that reflects both trust and responsibility, and one we take seriously as we continue to work at the intersection of technology, governance, and real-world impact.
Here’s the full announcement. Take a closer look: https://t.co/VCYPomH0I9
As a publishing community, we’ve reached a turning point. The conversation is no longer about whether to adopt AI or address bias, it’s about how thoughtfully we do both.
At the Council of Science Editors Annual Meeting 2026, these questions take center stage. What does it really mean to deploy AI in editorial workflows without compromising judgment? Can peer review truly evolve if we don’t actively confront the biases built into it?
Chirag Jay Patel will be contributing to both sides of this conversation, bringing practical insights from real-world implementations of AI, while also engaging in a critical dialogue on fostering diversity and equity across peer review systems. These aren’t parallel challenges. They are deeply connected. The future of publishing depends on how well we balance scale with scrutiny and innovation with responsibility.
If you’re attending CSE, we’d welcome the opportunity to continue this conversation in person both inside and beyond the session rooms.
Our CEO has a new feature out and it’s one worth your attention!
Akhilesh Ayer, our CEO is featured in the latest issue of All About Book Publishing, where he shares his perspective on Reimagining Scholarly Publishing Through AI, Technology and Global Collaboration.
In the interview, he reflects on how publishing is evolving in response to scale, complexity and rising expectations. From the role of AI in strengthening research integrity and streamlining workflows, to the importance of human expertise in maintaining quality and trust, the conversation brings together the realities and possibilities shaping the industry today. He also touches on how global collaboration and more connected systems can make research more accessible, discoverable and impactful.
A meaningful feature for us and a conversation that feels especially relevant right now. Have a look (Pages 10–12): https://t.co/e5vArY2k2v
📢Big News: Imagetwin is now integrated into CACTUS workflows.
Imagetwin is embedded within Paperpal Preflight, CACTUS’ editorial integrity and workflow efficiencies solution. This integration enables early-stage image integrity checks for duplication, manipulation, plagiarism and AI-generated visuals built directly into existing processes.
Image-related issues are often complex and easy to miss through manual review alone. Hence by embedding Imagetwin into our workflows, we are enabling teams to screen figures more reliably, strengthen quality checks and make more informed editorial decisions without adding extra steps.
This marks a step forward in making integrity a consistent, scalable part of the process rather than a late-stage intervention.

We’re delighted to share that we’re finalists at the Society for Scholarly Publishing EPIC Awards 2026 in two categories!🎉
The first is for SmartScreen by Paperpal Preflight. The idea here is simple - catch issues before a manuscript is submitted, not after it’s already in review. In our work with publishers, pre submission screening has helped flag gaps in compliance, structure and integrity early, when authors can still fix them. That means fewer avoidable delays and stronger submissions going into peer review.
This case study, developed with @Wolters_Kluwer, breaks down what that looks like in practice and the kind of impact it’s having:
https://t.co/0DgNHl4MKG
The second is for the AGU Author Video Series. We turned detailed research into short, engaging videos that are easier to follow, helping more people understand and connect with the work without needing to go through the full paper first.
Two categories. Two finalists. We’re thrilled to see our work getting recognized. Best of luck and congratulations to all the other finalists as well.
