Today marked a huge personal accomplishment for me.
I got something done that I have been trying to do for 26 years.
I woke up before my 86-year-old grandfather.
Every time I stay over at my grandparents’ house, before bed, me and my grandpa tell each other “Whoever wakes up first will wake the other one up”.
He has always been the first to rise because every morning he wakes up at 3:30am to read his bible and spend his personal time with the Lord and then he’ll come wake me up before my grandma wakes up so we can spend time together, typically around 6am.
This morning however, I rose at 445, expecting him to be sitting in his chair reading his bible. He wasn’t.
“This is my time”, I thought to myself. As soon as I started making noise in the kitchen, I saw his bedside lamp turn on. I took my dog outside and came back into him fully dressed and in the kitchen sitting at the bar where he normally sits, taking his medicine.
“You want some breakfast?” I asked. He responded with a smile on his face, “As long as I have someone to eat it with.”
I made him his favorite. Two sunny side eggs, two slices of bacon and a yogurt bowl. We sat at the bar and sipped our coffee and ate our breakfast while visiting about the plans for the day, new developments with our ranch and our cattle.
I won’t ever forget this morning. It was symbolic to me. It was the passing of the Hill torch.
In every family, there is someone who could change the future of the last name, for better or for worse.
My family has always been rather ‘land rich’, as they call it. But not fiscally wealthy.
Until my grandfather.
After graduating college and getting married to his wife of now 60 years, they were dirt poor.
My family has been cattle ranchers for 7 generations, but if you know anything about the cattle business, the goal each year is to break even. If you break even, you’re doing something right.
Struggling to give his family of 5 the life he wanted them to have, he started 3 different endeavors to put food on the table.
He worked full time as a land-surveyor, part time as a real estate broker, and part time as an insurance salesman, all while going on mission trips to Turkey each year, running a cattle operation, and serving as the president of the school board.
He has done all this and managed to take care of what needs to be done, while being diagnosed with two different forms of cancer in his 86-year-old life and beating it twice.
Because I’ve known him for 26 years, I know he would give all the glory to God.
But there must be some level of commitment to oneself and to his family name in order to achieve what he has achieved for his family.
He took our family from being “land rich” to wealthy in the following sixty-five years.
Him, along with his siblings and cousins, and his children, built an empire.
120,000 acres stretched between central east Texas and south Colorado.
Various oil and gas and mineral rights that will feed our family for generations long after he is gone.
He built a nation recognized, top of the line, cattle organization that has been featured in many magazines and cattle sold across the country that has fed countless other families.
None of this would be possible without him.
This morning, while it may seem insignificant to some, was so important for me.
The torch has been passed down.
The weight of your last name should fuel you for more and more and more, or until you’re happy with what you built.
Every single person that took the time to read this story, could change how the world sees your last name.
To what heights can you not reach?
Why not you?
