Mars is very good at impersonating Earth — and that is the trick.

Some of its most striking landscapes are not just scenery. They are the archive of a world that no longer exists.

Curiosity photographed the Murray Buttes on the lower slopes of Mount Sharp, inside Gale Crater: rugged mesas and buttes carved from stacked sedimentary rock. Wind and time have worn them into shapes that look almost familiar — desert monuments you might expect in the American Southwest. Almost.

These layers grew under Martian rules. They record different chapters of Gale Crater’s past: lake-bed sediments from a wetter era, then later deposits remade by wind and erosion. Their chemistry and mineralogy are not decoration. They are testimony — whether water was here, what kind of water it was, and when the planet began to dry out.

That is why the rover is not sightseeing. As it climbs Mount Sharp, it compares younger rocks with older ones and pieces together a timeline: from a wetter Mars to the cold, arid world we see today.

A panorama like this is beautiful. Each exposed layer is also a page. Mars looks still and silent. Its landscape is holding billions of years.
