The (second) murder of Socrates: A diagnosis of the exact vulnerability of the current era.

Modern society has killed Socrates. Ironically, he is its only salvation.

Socrates is dead because modern infrastructure is increasingly engineered to optimize for consensus and compliance, rather than truth.

When power structures—whether state governments or overarching institutional bodies—seek to manage populations by deciding which opinions are "safe" and permitting only approved narratives to reach the public, the fundamental Socratic act of questioning becomes an intolerable threat.

Athens did not execute Socrates because he was incorrect. They executed him because he bypassed the state's monopoly on truth and demonstrated to the citizens how to stress-test reality for themselves.

He is the only salvation because the Socratic method remains the ultimate defense mechanism against narrative control and enforced orthodoxy. It operates as a safeguard through three unyielding mechanics:

* The Refusal of Dictated Premises: Socrates never allowed his opponent to start halfway down a logical path. If an authority dictates that a certain policy, regulation, or limit on speech is "for the greater good," Socratic dialectic halts the conversation to ruthlessly dissect what "good" actually means, stripping away the rhetoric to expose the underlying motive.

* The Exposure of False Certainty: The modern world excels at presenting highly managed, sanitized narratives as absolute, unquestionable facts. Socrates treated absolute certainty as the ultimate red flag. His method forces individuals to articulate exactly how they know what they claim to know, which rapidly collapses arguments built on mere compliance or institutional authority.

* Courage Over Comfort: The death of Socrates is just as instructive as his life. He demonstrated that intellectual sovereignty requires a willingness to face severe social, and sometimes physical, consequences. A society that prioritizes intellectual safety and regulated discourse over the dangerous pursuit of truth is a society that has lost its immune system.

If speech continues to be curtailed and discourse filtered so that only prevailing institutional narratives survive, the only effective countermeasure is a populace armed with Socratic defiance—people willing to ask the fundamental, uncomfortable "Why?" until the artificial boundaries of permitted thought collapse.

To resurrect Socrates is not to simply read his dialogues; it is to weaponize his method.

A new Finnish nationwide register study has been published.

They looked into every under-23 who contacted Finland’s gender clinics from 1996–2019.

2,083 children and young adults vs 16,643 matched controls, followed in mandatory national health registers (so basically the full country picture).

What they found

- Gender-referred youth had far more serious psychiatric illness than peers — before referral (~46% vs ~15%) and it increased ≥2 years after (~62% vs ~15%).

- Kids referred after 2010 arrived with more psychiatric need than earlier cohorts.

- Among those who got medical “gender reassignment,” psychiatric morbidity INCREASED over follow-up (about 10% → 61% for feminising pathways; ~22% → ~55% for masculinising).

- Authors’ bottom line: psychiatric needs do not go away after medical reassignment!
