@stevemagness They used to do this as part of the tv broadcast (80s and 90s). It’s how I learned the sport. Unfortunately, that assumes the viewer can handle something more than empty platitudes, so it won’t happen again.
@stevemagness@lime_crush He experimented during his career. By the 90’s, he had his athletes walking inside sets and jogging between. He justified it as personal preference, because he couldn’t find a meaningful difference between the two.
@stevemagness@coachgambetta He was a life-changing mentor.
Two lessons I learned from Bob and have taken into teaching:
1. Be careful about what you teach your body to do. It’s a quick learner.
2. Listen to your body and make adjustments. Don’t be a victim the original plan.
“How many times have you been asked, ‘what are you going to do with that liberal arts degree?’ The right answer is 'whatever I want!'” So said Class of 2024 Commencement speaker Meg Frost ’94, director of product design at Apple. More speech excerpts: https://t.co/Ujc3aQR61W
@Carl_Lewis Is the long jump immune to the technological “advances” that have made such a difference in the other events? If that’s the case, it should take a true generational talent to approach the world record. Harder to sell with our current simplistic broadcasting.
@stevemagness My favorite question of a good coach is “where do your eyes start when you are seeing someone for the first time?” Every coach I’ve talked with has had an answer with a reason. It’s generally been a split between hips and feet, but the reasoning has been the most informative.
@JFTMichigan That run by Kolka was impressive. After dueling over 5 miles of constant hills and turns, he kicked away up a 100 meter hill in the final quarter mile. (Most of the guys I talked to who wore watches had between 5.25 and 5.35 miles for the 8k.)
Last week the Caines took on another ADK High Peak - Big Slide. Per usual, we take a picture of everyone in our group who attended @wittenberg at the summit. It was a tough climb and tougher descent, but we made it! #tigerup
@scottcarlinpt Conversation with a middle school XC runner:
"I have asthma."
"So do you have your inhaler with you if needed."
"No. I didn't get one because the asthma goes away after a month."
@karagoucher As a teacher, I believe the only appropriate response is to try new names each meet until you find one that is acceptable. Next time try cutie pie. Or go the other way with macho man.
@nickwillis@JasonLanceHall There is a very low bar for the shirts to come off in high school. I've had a group pull their shirts at 55 degrees because "We live in Michigan. This is warm."
My post for Daily Nous. It's called "Teacher, Bureaucrat, Cop."
It's about three different roles of an instructor: the teacher educates, the bureaucrat evaluates, the cop enforces. These roles can conflict - and sometimes we have to choose.

@urcmich statement on Michigan's FY 2023 budget for higher education - the largest investment in our sector in two decades. Thank you @michiganleg and @GovWhitmer
Business leaders from across the state are increasingly urging state officials to expand investment in #Michigan’s universities so highly educated college graduates are available to keep up with the growing demand for workers.
