In the alternate ending, Neville comes to understand that he is the true monster.
The alternate ending of I Am Legend completely reframes what the film is about. In the theatrical version, Robert Neville dies a heroic death, sacrificing himself to protect a potential cure that could save humanity.
But the original alternate ending takes a far more unsettling turn, shifting the perspective entirely. It suggests that Neville may not be the hero at all—at least not in the eyes of the infected he has been hunting.
Here, the Alpha Male doesn’t attack Neville’s home out of rage or hunger, but to retrieve his mate, a female infected Neville had taken for experimentation. Once Neville realizes this, he understands the connection between them when the Alpha draws a butterfly symbol on the glass, matching the tattoo on her neck. Neville releases her, and the infected respond with visible relief and affection.
As he looks over the photographs of those he has killed in his lab—what he once considered monsters—Neville comes to a disturbing realization: to this new species, he is the real urban legend, a feared figure who hunts them from the shadows.
