Greenmount Beach is one of many beaches that employs shark control nets to try and deter sharks from entering popular beaches. Shark nets are a controversial form of shark control, and this attack could support claims that the nets are not 100% effective.

It has been 8 years since the last shark attack, and more than 60 years since the last fatal shark attack on the Gold Coast. An investigation will need to be conducted to determine what species of shark it was and how it got around the shark control equipment.

It’s also very important that steps are taken to protect this new nursery area. Only juveniles were found in this area, suggesting that it’s important for manta development. Protecting it allows these animals to continue to grow and reproduce unimpeded by human activity.

This is only the third manta nursery area ever found and it’s possible that these Florida mantas constitute a new species of manta ray. Very little is known about manta rays and this newfound nursery could reveal previously unknown facts about the manta life cycle.
