From corner store to city supermarket, our association proudly supports a grocery industry that nourishes the nation's most populous state.

"Family farmers in the United States and across the G7 are facing the same squeeze: input prices driven up by war, trade disruptions and a handful of corporations that control the fertilizer, seed and crop protection markets."

#Grocery #affordability is often understood by #CPI, measuring impacts to shoppers, but the Producer Price Index can be a leading indicator. In a business where profit margins hover around 1.6%, it's predictive of the direction grocery prices are headed.

We're pushing back in San Jose because we know these policies don't work. Instead of convenience they bring longer wait times and fewer checkout stands. Advocates don't really care if they make your shopping trip inconvenient and less affordable.

Everyone talks about expanding food access, but it takes real engagement and skin in the game from elected officials to help grocers grow in communities. Thank you @DanielLurie for supporting grocers and T&T Supermarket!

T&T Supermarket is opening its doors in San Francisco on Thursday, November 5!

T&T CEO Tina Lee joined me on site at Masonic and Geary for an early look at the store and to talk about what it took to get this new store across the finish line.

The city worked closely with T&T—Canada’s largest Asian grocery store—to make permitting easy, resulting in the fastest permitting process for any T&T location in the United States.

Through PermitSF, we’re working to make permitting faster and more predictable. For T&T, that included clearer timelines and application requirements, better coordination across city departments, and the ability to submit key permits online.

Grocery stores are an important part of a thriving city, and T&T is making a major investment in San Francisco. We’re going to keep improving the permitting process so businesses can invest, open their doors, and create jobs in our neighborhoods.

See you at T&T on Nov. 5!

Here's the fun part: We already know restricting self-checkout doesn't fix any of the problems it purports to solve. The City of Long Beach's own research on its ordinance shows it only leads to longer wait times & less convenience for shoppers.

"The sustained increase in oil prices brought on by the Iran war this year is putting enough pressure on the grocery industry that retail prices are unlikely to remain in check as the year progresses," says Ricky Volpe, professor of agribusiness at California Polytechnic State University.

There's a substantial disconnect between the way elected officials see businesses in their communities and how industries evaluate their own business realities. For example, recent policy fights for grocers have focused on restricting their use of technology — whether it's self-checkout or data-driven marketing and promotions.

From today's @GroceryDive: "To draw customers into their stores and build lasting relationships with them, grocers need to be able to invest in price reductions, remodeling campaigns, wages and other priorities. But how do you take on extra costs when you have less money coming in?"

Traditional grocers are fighting tooth and nail to compete and grow to serve more Californians, but also navigating declining sales in many cases. If we want to expand food access and affordability, elected officials should work to partner with their local grocers instead of limiting their ability to compete and keep their doors open.

Californians pay the highest grocery prices in the country because of the state's regulatory environment. #LA is a microcosm of these challenges.

“One of the most immediate strains is being felt in the grocery aisle, particularly with produce, meat and other perishable foods that need to be hauled in and restocked frequently,” the Associated Press reported on Friday.

When the cost of living is keeping Californians up at night, it's vital elected leaders do everything they can to protect loyalty & discount programs that save shoppers money. Thank you to the Senate & Assembly members who stood against a flawed surveillance pricing bill. #caleg

🚨The forces pushing up food prices are starting to pile up: expensive grain, soaring fertilizer and fuel, plus unpredictable weather and raging wars, according to @Axios.

Your grocery store is fed by a vast global supply chain, and pressures are building all along it.

An adorable dog from Ramona went viral online after his owner uploaded videos of him helping delivery drivers carry packages to the door. 🤩

"He brings joy and a huge smile to our face every time he delivers a package or a toy or groceries into the house. It’s just so delightful to see him being so proud that he does this," his owner, Jenniffer Nungesser, said.

When a grocery store is forced to close its doors at one location, there can be a myopic focus on getting another grocer through those doors. The truth is grocers can't stand in place. The old gym or mass retailer that closed its doors in the same neighborhood might now be the best option for a grocer to serve a community, like in the example below. This is why policy approaches that nearsightedly only seek to swap a grocer for a grocer do not ultimately improve food access.
