Dara Jikiemi rejected Celtic’s new contract offer, turned down Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, and signed a five year deal at Liverpool.
He is 16 years old. He captains Scotland at both U15 and U16 level. He has won 80% of his defensive duels for the national youth teams and 18 of 19 in his last five games. He has not yet made his first team debut for Celtic.
Liverpool have now signed five young centre-backs since last summer. Giovanni Leoni from Parma. Mor Talla Ndiaye in January. Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60 million. Ifeanyi Ndukwe. And now Jikiemi from Celtic.
This is a club that watched Ben Doak leave Celtic for Liverpool’s academy in 2022 and eventually sell him to Bournemouth for £25 million. They have decided to run that model repeatedly and at scale.
Celtic are losing their best young players to Premier League academies before those players ever make a senior appearance. The training compensation Celtic receive for a cross-border transfer is significantly less than what they would get domestically.
Scotland produces the player. Celtic develops the player. Liverpool signs the player before the first team even sees him.
The pipeline runs in one direction and it has been running that way for years.

The notion that Scotland do not have a squad of players capable of scoring more than 1 goal is not one that has any legs for me. We’ve seen worse squads from other nations, Ireland, Greece etc perform far better at international tournaments previously.

Studies also suggest that culture and policing philosophies play a role in police brutality and deaths.

Given our record in Scotland, this would be disastrous.
