THE DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB NO ONE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT.

I just read the Bloodhorse article “Dollars & Sense: Two Sets of Numbers, Different Stories”.

Everyone keeps debating handle, purses, race dates and year over year statistics.

They’re missing the real story.

Horse racing’s fan base and betting customer are getting older every year. The industry is not replacing them with enough people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

Our fan base is shrinking.

THAT’S THE WAGERING CRISIS!

At the same time, we’ve built a wagering system that many everyday bettors believe favors sophisticated CAW teams with substantial rebates and technological advantages. If the average fan feels the game isn’t on a level playing field, why would the next generation choose horse racing over the countless other betting options available today?

And where is the leadership?

Where is the national media strategy?

Where is the marketing plan to reach younger audiences?

Where is the social media strategy?

Where is the transparency on CAWs?

Where is the urgency?

This is exactly why horse racing needs an independent commissioner based model, one organization with the authority and responsibility to grow the sport, coordinate a national marketing strategy, modernize wagering, improve transparency, and make attracting new fans and bettors one of the industry’s top priority.

The future of horse racing won’t be determined by today’s handle.

It will be determined by whether there are enough fans and bettors in their 20s, 30s and 40s to replace those we inevitably lose over the next decade.

That’s the number we should all be talking about.

Paid $715 for 5 seats in Sec. 116. And $100+ in food.

With sloppy passing, stupid penalties and pucks rolling through the pricey legs of a defensemen, it'll be months before spending that much for watching no effort whatsoever!
