TODAY: @GavinNewsom’s day in Montgomery began alongside Mayor Steven Reed at Pierce’s Country Cooking, before they set out for a trolley tour tracing the city’s history, including Montgomery’s former slave-auction site, the church once led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and past the Alabama State Capitol — where voting-rights marchers completed their journey from Selma in 1965.

The Governor and Mayor Reed then joined approximately 100 community leaders at Legacy Hall for a conversation about moral leadership, civil rights, and affordability — drawing a connection between Montgomery’s history fighting for fundamental rights to the present moment, as Donald Trump rolls back civil rights and voting rights.

At Alabama State University, the Governor joined students for a conversation led by Student Government Association President Myles Wilson on jobs, entrepreneurship, the anxieties of AI, the importance of HBCUs and the power of young people to shape the future.

The Governor concluded his time in Montgomery with Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson, returning to EJI’s Legacy sites he has visited previously. Near the Legacy Museum — built on the site of a former warehouse where enslaved people were once held, steps from a former slave-auction site — the two reflected on Montgomery’s history and the enduring connections between slavery, racial injustice, mass incarceration and the fight for equal justice today.
