There's this belief that once you get a corporate job in 🇳🇬Nigeria, especially in a big company, your money problems are solved. People see the ID card, the air-conditioned office, and they assume you're comfortable. The truth is usually very different.

I remember when I first got into the corporate world. The salary looked decent on paper. But after tax, pension, NHF, and other deductions, what actually entered my account was much smaller. Then came the real expenses, rent in a decent area, NEPA bill that could shock you, fuel or transport, feeding, and the constant calls from mum.

Every month followed almost the same pattern. By the second week, a good part of the salary was already gone.

My younger brother would call for one need or the other. Some were genuine, others you couldn't really ignore without feeling bad. You want to help, but you're also trying to build something for yourself. Most times, you end up stretching what you have until the next salary.

The funny part is the image people have of you especially your neighbours. Relatives and friends think you're doing well because you work in a "big company." They don't see the calculations you do before spending.

They don't see how you sometimes skip certain things or delay personal plans just to meet expectations.

Some days you even feel guilty for not being able to do more.
