In an announcement that has raised concerns, a fleet of robotic dogs has been deployed to patrol the streets of New York City. The potential for an inadvertent incident involving the use of lethal force by these robots is a serious concern, especially given the lack of accountability mechanisms in place. If an unarmed civilian were to be shot by one of these robotic inventions, will the headline attribute blame to the robotic dog’s lack of proper training and data, or will those responsible be shielded from prosecution under the guise of qualified immunity?
It is also noteworthy that the initial test run of these robotic dogs will be conducted in Black communities, despite the fact that the city has a Black Mayor and Black Chief of Police. This decision raises questions about the intention behind the deployment of these machines and the potential for these communities to bear the brunt of any negative outcomes. The use of our own to enforce such measures is not a new tactic, and it is concerning that it may be used to absolve those responsible of any blame or accusations of racism.
A black man…in Colorado…who owns 1,000 acres of land…is being harassed…his livestock are being killed…his dogs are being poisoned…his family is being threatened…simply for existing. Not because he hurt anyone, assaulted anyone, harassed anyone…
