Photograph from my upcoming book. The Clivus Argentarius (one of Rome's oldest streets & still in use) leads to the Forum of Caesar. Caesar's complex set a model for future imperial developments comprising temples, piazzas and colonnades – all exhibiting a flavour of the East.

Photograph from my upcoming book. The Temple of Portunus, Rome (80 BC ) is one of the best preserved of all Roman temples, owing to it being converted into a Christian church. The temple is dedicated to the god Portunus; protector of gateways, keys and livestock.
