The mistake we are prone to make when reading the Scriptures is to first ask, “how does this apply to my life?”, before we ask, “what does this text actually mean?” And then, “what does this text teach me about God?”
Scripture is first and foremost God’s revelation of Himself.
The Father is not the Son or the Holy Spirit, but He is Father alone. The Son is not the Father or the Spirit, but Son alone. The Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son, but Spirit alone. Three persons, one undivided essence. Three in one, one in three.
The narrow scope of the gospel: Jesus saves sinners from Hell.
The broad scope of the gospel: Jesus transfers sinners into His glorious, eternal kingdom.
The result of the gospel: to know God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.
The goal of the gospel: the glory of God.
What are believers to do during these turbulent times?
1. Love the Lord (Mt 22:37)
2. Love your neighbor (Mt 22:39)
3. Give justice to the weak (Ps 82:3)
4. Pray without ceasing (1 Th 5:17)
5. Be at peace (Rm 12:18)
6. Make disciples (Mt 28:19-20)
7. Serve one another (Gal 5:13)
Never let the secularists silence you.
The Christian faith is not a private faith but a proclaimed faith. ‘Faith comes by hearing the Word of Christ.’
Be bold. Proclaim Christ.
Jonathan Edwards wrote a lot on the spiritual discipline of fasting. Here are 4 reasons he gives for why believers should fast.
1. To Humble Ourselves Before God
Edwards emphasized that fasting is a means of humbling oneself before God. By abstaining from food and other comforts, believers acknowledge their dependence on God and their own insufficiency. This humility opens the heart to God's grace and fosters a spirit of repentance and submission.
2. To Seek a Greater Sense of God’s Presence
Edwards believed that fasting helps believers seek and experience a more profound sense of God's presence. By setting aside physical needs and distractions, fasting allows for more focused prayer and communion with God, heightening spiritual awareness and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.
3. To Seek God’s Guidance and Aid in Times of Trouble
Edwards advocated for fasting as a way to seek God's guidance and aid, especially during times of distress or crisis. Fasting, combined with prayer, demonstrates earnestness in seeking divine intervention and clarity, showing a reliance on God’s wisdom and power.
4. To Express and Intensify Prayer
According to Edwards, fasting serves to express and intensify the sincerity of prayer. The act of fasting signifies the seriousness and urgency of one’s petitions before God, amplifying the believer's plea for God’s mercy, intervention, and blessings.
These reasons reflect Edwards' view that fasting is not merely a physical discipline but a profound spiritual practice that deepens one's relationship with God, enhances prayer, and demonstrates genuine humility and dependence on divine providence.
Remember, Jesus said “when you fast” (Mt 6:16-18), not “if you fast.”
You do not become a Christian until you are willing to surrender your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Many believe intellectually in the cross. But it is yet another thing altogether to repent of your sins and trust Christ, who is Lord, in faith.
"God has not only chosen you for heaven, He has chosen you to be His representative on this earth. Let nothing distract you from that purpose.” – Steve Lawson
"A great help during temptation is to remember that to sin is more than just breaking a rule; it is to grieve the Person who loves us beyond measure. "
Paul Washer
You will never have true revival without two critical elements: prayer and biblical preaching.
If prayer and biblical preaching are NOT at the center of the movement you can be sure it is NOT a revival.
The man, woman, youth or child who has truly received the Gospel, will stand upon it and in their standing they prove that they have truly received it.
The great significance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is that we no longer live in a world where bodily resurrection is a possibility, but we live in a world where bodily resurrection is a reality.
Jesus Christ has been raised!
The gospel is God’s gospel. The gospel originates with God, it belongs to God, and it is all about what God has done for his people through Christ by the Spirit. Because it’s his gospel, we must not mess with it, dilute it, change it, or complicate it.
