🚨The Government has just announced a new development corporation for Cambridge.
Cambridge is one of the most exciting cities in the world but it is held back by a lack of homes, workplaces and infrastructure.
📈The Greater Cambridge development corporation can speed this up and be a HUGE boost for growth and living standards. Here’s why…
The Greater Cambridge development corporation will speed up:
🏘️Thousands of new homes.
♻️The regeneration of brownfield sites across Cambridge
👷Thousands of jobs fit for the future
💰Billions in investment
📈Rising living standards for families.
How do we know this?
🏃When the London Legacy Development Corporation renewed Stratford for the London 2012 Olympic Games, it successfully enabled the building of 33,000 homes, achieved £12.5 billion in investment, and revitalised the local area.

NEW: Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook has just announced the BIGGEST EVER reforms to national policy to deliver more homes! Here are the five biggest: 🧵
This growth of housing costs is totally unsustainable, and holds Britain's most economically productive cities back.
The government needs to get serious again about building.
Today, house prices have hit a record high.
The average home now costs £299,862 – that’s eight times the median annual salary.
This means that Britain's homes have become 30% more expensive in the space of seven years 👇
More big news on the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor!
The corridor is a HUGE opportunity to drive more growth and prosperity to Cambridge, Oxford, and everywhere in-between!
Great thread from @yimbyalliance on the new announcements 👇
TODAY the government announced a package for infrastructure, homes and business space for the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor.
The Growth Corridor could add up to £78 bn to the economy by 2035 📈
🧵Here are the big takeaways (+ the REOPENING of a railway line after 60 years)
Affordable Housing is often a barrier to actual reductions in average rents.
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
When affordable housing requirements cause less development, they make housing more expensive for us all.
There’s good evidence that building market rate housing reduces rents across the market (not just at the top end).
If affordability requirements make development unviable, then not only will we see less affordable homes (100% of 0 is 0) but less downward pressure on rents.
NEW: the government has announced a package of planning and infrastructure reforms.
It includes a measure to help speed up building the new reservoirs that are vital to delivering new homes in a range of places.
2. What should Britain’s priorities be over the next year?
The most popular options were further planning reform, building Oxford-Cambridge and speeding up new nuclear energy projects.
‘98% of adults living with parents cannot afford their own home’ - astonishing news to all those who assumed they were living there just for the fun of it
The government has made some progress on development.
But all it takes is a NIMBY cabinet appointment or government to come in, and all the progress vanishes.
Serious reform means permanently removing the unnecessary hoops and administrative nightmares facing new development.
We've approved 21 major infrastructure projects in one year – the most in the first year of a Parliament in history
🌊 Offshore wind farms powering 3m homes
🛣️ Roads to speed up 90,000+ commutes
✈️ Airport expansion for cheaper holidays
⚡ Clean energy creating 1000s of jobs
The East of England performs very poorly when it comes to housing affordability; high demand areas like Cambridge fare even worse.
This is not sustainable. We need to build more, to make housing affordable again.
In London, the average home was not affordable for any household income decile.
In three other regions (South East, East of England & South West), the average home was only affordable to the top decile.

UK Construction is under threat from a 30x INCREASE in landfill tax.
This will add a cost of £22,000 to £52,000 to each new home built!
Email your MP. The treasury must not make this mistake, or another huge barrier to housebuilding will arise. ⬇️

Each day we fail to get serious about building more energy infrastructure, faster, we will fall further behind the rest of the world.
Cambridge needs business.
Cambridge needs investment.
Therefore Cambridge needs cheaper electricity.
Korea generated more 12 percent more nuclear electricity per Korean in 2024 than Britain generated TOTAL electricity per person.
Nuclear power produced only 31.7 percent of South Korean electricity.
☀️ Suffering in the summer heat?
Now is a good moment to remember there's no reason you should have to!
Air conditioning is essential. Dated restrictions and planning rules make it expensive and difficult to access.
We should change that! ⬇️
As Britain enters its third (fourth?) heatwave of the year, here's a short thread on why air conditioning is *actively good* for fighting climate change, and why we should stop banning it from new homes. 🧵
Worrying statements from Housing Minister @mtpennycook here.
YIMBYism is the sole solution to the housing crisis. Describing this as only a "conservative idea" is misguided.
Parties from all sides of the political spectrum can and must endorse a YIMBY agenda, including Labour.
Housing minister Matthew Pennycook caught on camera rubbishing YIMBY claims that slashing planning red tape could lead to a housing boom that brings down prices... despite that being Labour policy
