The Japanese Meteorological Agency becomes the first major weather body to formally call the onset of El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific.
It's the first El Niño in three years, and some forecaster expect to be one of the strongest ever.

CHART OF THE DAY: Perhaps the most important story in global markets / geopolitics right now.
China's oil imports plunged to ~6.6m b/d in May, according to @Vortexa data, down ~38% vs 2025 average (or ~4m b/d).

The irony here is that Trump ordering the US Navy to sail back and forth through the Strait of Hormuz to prove it's open is instead demonstrating exactly how much everyone else will get shot at if they attempt to transit
It does appears that WA-03 is struggling with its approach into Early Modernity, based on the arising issues coming from the enclosure of forest land by German princes
Bacteria move around using a molecular machine called the flagellar motor that rotates faster than the flywheel of a race car engine and switches directions in an instant. After 50 yrs, scientists have finally figured out how it works. “My lifelong quest is now fulfilled.” Link⤵️
wrong. during the four year duration of this administration we will experience artificially heightened volatility specifically engineered to create short-term trading opportunities for insiders
I’ve been describing the supply loss from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as an “air pocket” moving through the normal flow of oil out of the Gulf
Helpful map from JPM highlighting when that air pocket will “land” in different major consuming regions:
- East Africa last week
- East Asia this week
- Europe next week
- North America two more weeks
Chinese international student in my class was telling me about how his evangelical dad in Beijing believes that Trump was chosen by god to win the election, but that this victory is part of a larger divine plan to destroy the united states
I wrote earlier that this article suggests that the mainstream media is starting to catch up with reality. Yes, but also no. It is grasping that this is a strategic error, but is nowhere near understanding the scale of it. It focusses, as is usual, on the immediate consequences: economic calamity, the benefits to Russia, etc. But this is chicken feed. In fact, Tehran now has an opportunity to remake the Middle East in its favour, but more than that, the war has demonstrated that the US cannot defend the strategic status quo in East Asia/the Western Pacific -- that is to say, it cannot maintain its defensive perimeter vs China on the First Island Chain. This is an epochal strategic turnaround, and the geopolitical effects of it have not even begun.
