I love food. A bit too much.
I love people. Perhaps not enough.
I love sharing food and conversation around tables.
So I wrote about it.

NSW is on track to see more than $10 Billion lost to poker machines in 2026, losses climbing at more than twice the rate of inflation. And losses are concentrated in postcodes and communities that can least afford it. It’s time to Put Pokies in Their Place.
"There seem to be only three certainties in NSW right now: death, taxes and spiralling poker machine losses." @CameronStu@wesleymission

'Industry figures say the highest-earning gambling pubs in NSW rake in between $15 million and $20 million in gambling profits a year - which equates to about $190 million to $250 million being fed into each pub's poker machines a year.' @FinancialReview
Inequitable. Outrageous
There's only three things certain in NSW - death, taxes and spiralling pokies losses. $2.37B lost in just 3 months, a 9.4% increase year on year - more than twice inflation rate. NSW punters lose$26.4m every day, $1.1m every hour. It's Groundhog Day on steroids. Real reform NOW!
This is excellent leadership from @MayorDarcy Byrne and is just the kind of thing Labor needs to do to stick up for the battler. Please listen, Mr Premier @ChrisMinnsMP and put #airbagsonpokies

That’s $500k - $670k profit per machine annually. It’s obscene.
“No one bought or sold any babies.”
In the next breath:
“Both women were financially compensated for contributing to the birth of our daughter – the surrogate enough to buy a nice car but not change a life, the donor a much smaller amount.”

Aussies - be alert. The push for legalising commercial surrogacy (under the more ambiguous title “compensated surrogacy”) is well and truly on. It’s already being formally considered and strongly advocated for at both a state and federal level. It’s time to educate yourself and speak against the commodification of children.

PS: From the article : “We also had to navigate complex legal systems, citizenship and immigration laws … when all we wanted was to be cuddling our gorgeous newborn.”
What they ACTYALLY mean by this is that their commercial procurement of a child overseas and bringing that child into Australia (something that is normally called “human trafficking”) was absolutely illegal according to the laws of our land but that they did it anyway knowing that there was almost zero chance they would be prosecuted.
Australians are generally “less satisfied” with life than we were a decade ago. Men particularly so, according to the Bureau of Statistics social survey.
Australians lose $87 million to gambling every day, an amount of money so staggering it is being featured in magazines like The Australian Women’s Weekly.
Great reporting by @HatAlexander and Bevan Shields in the @smh. It beggars belief we still don’t have a commitment from the NSW government to introduce cashless gambling, a key recommendation of the NSW Crime Commissioner to stamp out money laundering.

Grateful for the proactive and consultative approach of @SamRaeMP and @Mark_Butler_MP as they shape aged care that truly empowers older Australians to age with dignity at home.
We welcome Ministers @Mark_Butler_MP and Sam Rae's decision to fully fund showering and personal care in home aged care. Older Australians deserve dignity, safety and support to remain at home — this change helps deliver that. https://t.co/QkbxsotREJ
@Georges_River Council is pushing for gambling reform, and we're fully behind them. We're inviting more councils to join the #PutPokiesInTheirPlace campaign to pressure NSW Government to act.

‘The NRL, like the AFL, has deep connections with gambling. They include a lucrative deal with Sportsbet worth an estimated $15 million a year, agreements with bookmakers that reap more than $50 million a year…’
