UK cancels Kenya Military Training Exercise

📌 The United Kingdom and Kenya temporarily bypassed a diplomatic standoff over training permits on 28 July 2026, clearing the way for Exercise Haraka Storm to proceed in Laikipia County between September and November as originally scheduled.

📌 While the licenses for this specific event were granted, Kenya’s Parliament continues to halt the overarching long-term defense pact over troop accountability. The reversal came five days after the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) said the annual exercise would be moved outside Kenya because the required licences had not been issued in time; “It is with regret that the necessary licences required to allow training to take place in Laikipia later this year have not been forthcoming”.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has finished factory acceptance testing on its first three Leonardo M-346FA fighter-attack aircraft, clearing the jets for delivery from Italy after a test campaign that ran from 29 June to 9 July 2026.

📌 On July 22, 2026, the Washington Post reported that the U.S. was considering airstrikes in Mali, with National Security Council Senior Director for Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka emerging as a vocal advocate.

📌 The airstrikes, thus far hypothetical, would either target the al-Qa’ida affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM) or the Islamic State (IS) affiliate Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP). Despite interest from at least one voice in the administration, higher global military priorities, logistical constraints, and operational challenges make strikes both unlikely and strategically limited.

📌 The administration’s consideration is part of a broader U.S. attempt at rapprochement with Mali and coup-led governments in the region, undoing efforts to distance the U.S. under the Biden administration.
