Somewhere along the way you fall for them - of course you do. Not just the fictional versions you already loved but the real, complicated people you’ve gotten to know on a deep personal level. They grow close to you too, enough that you occasionally wonder if there could be something more, some part of you expects them to fall for you too. Isn’t that how this trope always goes?

But…they don’t.

They care about you. Deeply. Maybe some feelings even start to blur at the edges - feelings they don’t quite understand, moments where lines are almost crossed - but it’s never enough to make them stay. Because MC is waiting for them back home. She’s the one they love. Not you.

You’re rejected and it’s fucking humiliating. Of course they’d choose MC over you, she’s everything you’re not and you’re…you. You don’t resent them. You knew who they loved from the beginning. Suddenly every piece of MC they recognized in you, every strange familiarity they couldn’t explain, every feeling they couldn’t quite make sense of becomes horrifyingly obvious. The person they spent all that time desperately trying to return to had been standing right in front of them the entire time. They weren’t falling for two different people - they were falling in love with the same person twice this whole time! They left the person they loved behind trying to get back to her. And now there’s just a dead screen on their side, and they have no idea how to reach you again.

So they wait for you to log back in.
You never do.

Because you deleted the game as soon as they left. After knowing them as real people, playing a romance game about them felt weird and wrong and watching them love MC after believing they’d chosen her over you…hurts. As far as you know they got exactly what they wanted. They made it home to the woman they loved. So while you’re trying to move on and live without them, completely convinced they got their happy ending, they’re on the other side desperately trying to reopen a connection you unknowingly severed and get back to the person they now realize they never should’ve have left.
