It’s funny, because I gave a workshop a few days ago titled ‘communicating science in an age of distrust’, and one of the things I mentioned is that academia has a tendency to be incredibly patronizing which excludes the public and limits professionals from being authentic.

@HilaryRoseD@Botanical_ ...due to the lack of access to necessary medical procedures. However, that doesn't mean that BIPOC and LBGTQ+ people in Idaho shouldn't have access to scientific conferences near their homes.
@HilaryRoseD@Botanical_ I just don't believe that people who already have to live in a state where they are actively persecuted should be further discriminated against through even more limited access to the greater scientific community.
@HilaryRoseD@Botanical_ As a queer ecologist raised in Boise, I think you and the @Botanical_ both make some good points. Even though I personally have never had any safety issues when interacting with other locals due to my queerness, visiting or living in Boise as a queer person is inherently unsafe
