Hon. Nyombi Thembo @UCC_ED officially opened the Uganda Film Festival Awards Gala by welcoming the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, to her first Uganda Film Festival Awards Gala as Minister.

In his remarks, he said the Uganda Film Festival celebrated the talent, creativity and dedication of everyone contributing to Uganda’s film industry, from writers and directors to actors, technicians and audiences.

He noted that the festival, launched in 2013, had grown significantly over the past 13 years, with increasing film submissions, improving production quality and growing international recognition of Ugandan films.

He identified four key areas needed to take the industry to the next level:

Technology: Filmmakers should embrace smartphones, digital editing, streaming and AI while maintaining professionalism, ethics and strong storytelling.

Audiences: Ugandans should watch, recommend, share and pay for local content to strengthen the film ecosystem.

Piracy: He stressed the need to protect creative works so filmmakers could benefit from their intellectual property.

Business: Filmmakers should understand rights management, distribution, sponsorship, advertising, streaming and international sales, treating films as valuable intellectual property assets.

He reaffirmed UCC’s commitment to supporting the growth of Uganda’s film industry and thanked the Ministry, the UFF jury, the UCC team, nominees and winners for their contributions.

He encouraged nominees who did not win to keep creating and congratulated the winners, reminding them that an award was not the end of their journey, but an invitation to achieve even more.

Statement by The Rt Hon Justine Kasule Lumumba, Minister of ICT and National Guidance.

I join the Tooro Kingdom and all Ugandans in mourning His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, whose passing has left our nation heartbroken.

To the Royal Family and the entire Batooro, please accept my deepest condolences at this painful moment.

His Majesty ascended the throne at just three years old, becoming the youngest reigning monarch in the world, and went on to lead the Tooro Kingdom for 31 years with grace and purpose.

He grew into a king who understood his times, championing culture alongside youth empowerment and modern education, and in doing so gave the institution of Obukama a place in Uganda’s future as much as its past.
Uganda has lost a unique and unifying figure. May his memory be a comfort to the Batooro, and all of us.
Eternal life and peace be granted to his soul i pray.
