There was no such thing as Guinea as we know it today when the European came. We had 4 tribals self governing entities then. Some of them were doing very well (such as the lower Guinea) and had commercial ties and protectorate agreements with France and other western nations. Others weren’t doing so well and were engaged in wars amongst themselves for political control.
To its credit the French stopped the infighting and united the 4 tribal groups hence the republic of Guinea was born and became a colony of France later on.
I am not familiar with the history of Singapore but from the beginning the strategic location of that island and the free trade status that it benefited was a main attraction for Asians, Europeans and Middle Easterners that made that small fishing port a great commercial hub that it became.
I must also say that contrary to the French, the British always made sure that education was very important in all its colonies.
I think that made a big difference later on in the political, economic and social stability of the territories both nations were in control of.
@PowerRedRanGErX@Coinvo That’s true. But Japan also benefited from a massive western infusion of cash and other investments afterwards while my country was put under western embargo for sixty years.
I can’t talk for all of Africa, but i know what French colonialism did to my country:
When the French left Guinea en 1958 DeGaulle ordered his government to destroy the entire colonial administration, oppose Guinea’s membership at the United Nations, destroy all the school systems, repatriate all the French civil servants, destroy the road and the bridges and stop or remove any existing investments.
If that wasn’t good enough after they left they printed fake Guinea currency and flooded the country with it in order to sabotage the local economy.
These are verifiable historical facts.
And today they’re back !
They have overthrown our government through a coup d’état ready to start all over again.
@Coinvo Since almost all the countries in the world were at some point colonized, i cannot say with straight face that colonialism created all our misdeeds in Guinea. No i cannot.
All i can say is in our case it certainly wasn’t too helpful.
I wonder how many of you people have actually visited this place. I have. In & out. It’s surreal, extraordinary to see close up.Tourists from all over the world are already pouring in by the thousands. Have upgraded the entire neighborhood.
It’s useful, modern, built to last, very impressive inside.
Looking from outside you may not like it, but you can’t stop looking at it.
@BBCAfrica If you’re posting this so as a reader I can blame the president of Zimbabwe, you’re in for a disappointment.
« The people’s house passed the bill ».
We Africans are our first worst enemies !
@MikeNellis And they built it in the South side of Chicago.
For any one who knows the city this monument is a welcome change for that area of town. It will attract a lot of tourism and businesses that will benefit the entire city forever.
Kudos to the Obamas !
@AnalogCryptoDad@opolot_ronnie I think you’re the one who’s confused:
The 400 Million a year is the earning from the Jordan Brand.
The 250 Million is what he gets from Nike.
@DisavowTrump20 I see two people who’ve been friends for long time beyond politics.
I know these days people are miserable and incapable of making friends or admiring two people who are friends unconditionally.
Very sad!
As usual Trump attacked the library while still in construction with all kind of negative comments you can imagine. Obama will have to be a fool to invite him after those terrible comments.
Trump is always a bad news. Look what happened when he showed up at Knicks game: The only lost they had during the finals.
I’m not a Nigerian.
But here are some facts:
1- The Nigerian economy for bad or for worse is in the hands of Nigerians.
2- There are more billionaires in Nigeria than the rest of Africa combined.
As a matter of fact the richest man in Africa ( Aliko Dangote) is a Nigerian.
3-There is no such thing as a population of white native Nigerians.
On the other hands, and contrary to the rest of Africa white peoples who colonized South Africa never left. They are still in SA. They are the Afrikaners as you call them. Today they represent only between 4 to 5% to your population.
But they control 80% of your
economy.
It seems to me that if you wanted to solve your unemployment problems and you were smart enough, that should be your primary target.
Instead you’re going after other Africans that are even poorer than you are. (If they weren’t they wouldn’t be in your country).
You either have to be uneducated, confused, or demagogue enough not to see that.
Either way, that will make you, your people and your country a target for ridicule…and very much deserving .
The only question from the rest of us is, what you or your government are going to do about it ?
@LakeShowYo Although most people hated it and predicted Knicks will loose if he came, he came anyway, knowing he will be booed.
Also he’s the president. And for those reasons I think they should go to the White House.
The visit won’t take anything away from the Knicks anyway.
