🇨🇦 Canada has slipped into a technical recession.

StatsCan reports real GDP was essentially flat in Q1 2026 after a 1% drop in Q4 2025, meeting the common definition of two consecutive quarters of negative/stalling growth.

Higher gold imports, weak housing, and declining business investment dragged on the economy. A rebound is expected in April.

BREAKING: Canada is launching an $18.4 billion sovereign wealth fund to "bankroll major projects of national interest," per FT.

Details include:

1. This marks the first ever sovereign wealth fund for Canada and is is part of Carney’s drive to turn Canada into the “strongest economy of the G7”

2. The “Canada Strong Fund” will work alongside the private sector to finance 15 infrastructure proposals

3. This comes as Canada’s deficit jumped to C$78 billion in 2025, up from $42 billion the previous year

4. Carney looks to catalyze $1 trillion in total investment in Canada over the next 5 years

The move comes Canada has dealt with US tariffs for over one year.

We need more electricity:

AI data centers are set to consume 1,600 terawatt-hours of power demand by 2035, equal to 4.4% of global electricity.

In other words, power demand from AI data centers is set to QUADRUPLE over the next 10 years.

If counted as a country, AI data centers would rank 4th in electricity use, behind only China, the US, and India.

In major US markets, data center power demand is growing faster than that of electric vehicles, hydrogen, and other emerging technologies.

AI growth will soon be limited by energy.
