What were the Volhynian Massacres?
The Volhynian massacres were anti-Polish genocidal ethnic cleansings conducted by Ukrainian nationalists.
The massacres took place within Poland’s borders as of the outbreak of WW2, and not only in Volhynia, but also in other areas with a mixed Polish-Ukrainian population, especially the Lwów, Tarnopol, and Stanisławów voivodeships (that is, in Eastern Galicia), as well as in some voivodeships bordering on Volhynia (the western part of the Lublin Voivodeship and the northern part of the Polesie Voivodeship).
The time frame of these massacres was 1943−1945. The perpetrators were the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists−Bandera faction (OUN-B) and its military wing, called the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Their documents show that the planned extermination of the Polish population was called an “anti-Polish operation.”

Two allies are arguing about the past. Russia doesn’t have to lift a finger. Volodymyr Zelenskyy [@ZelenskyyUa] awarding an elite Ukrainian military unit the honorary title “Heroes of the UPA” this week triggered an immediate backlash in Poland. 🧵

🇨🇦🇵🇱 It was an honour to meet with Poland’s Deputy Minister of State Assets, @KonradGolota, at a special reception celebrating the strong and growing partnership between Canada and Poland. The special reception was hosted by Poland’s ambassador to Canada, @WitoldDzielski, and the Chair of the Canada-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group, my MP colleague @HelenaJaczek.
Canada and Poland are close allies who share a deep friendship based on shared democratic values, dynamic economic ties, our mutual interests in a robust transatlantic security architecture and collective security and punctuated by strong people-to-people connections.
Our enduring friendship was further strongly reaffirmed recently when Prime Minister @MarkJCarney and Prime Minister @donaldtusk strengthened the Canada-Poland strategic partnership. The enhanced partnership will deepen ties across trade, defence, and energy security – investing in key sectors, such as clean energy, including nuclear, critical minerals, defence, aviation, cybersecurity, and advanced technologies.
As democracies on the frontlines of supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom, Canada and Poland continue to work closely together to strengthen transatlantic security, build a safer and stronger future, and grow our economies.

Polish Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the vibrant culture, history, and contributions of the Polish community in Ontario and across Canada. 🇵🇱
With more than 500,000 Polish Canadians in Ontario, this month offers an opportunity to reflect on the strength and lasting impact of our community.
It is also a time to recognize the significance of Poland’s 1791 Constitution, a historic milestone that remains a powerful symbol of sovereignty and democratic values.
This week is the 235th anniversary of Poland’s May 3rd, 1791 constitution and May is Polish Heritage Month. Today, I spoke about Polish Heritage Month in the House of Commons.
It's Polish Heritage Month. As Chair of Canada-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group, I took part in the raising of the Canadian & Polish flags on Parliament Hill to honour the contributions of Polish Canadians & the enduring bonds between our 2 countries.
🇵🇱🇨🇦 Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for the raising of the Polish flag, as part of Polish Heritage Month in Canada!
Surrounded by friends and partners, we reflected on the values of freedom, democracy, and civic responsibility rooted in Poland’s Constitution of May 3, 1791, Europe’s first modern constitution and the second in the world. We also spoke about the historically strong and vibrant relationship between Poland and Canada, which we continue to deepen together. 🤝
We extend our sincere thanks to Prime Minister @MarkJCarney for his warm wishes; the feeling is truly mutual.
The event was organised by the @CanPolCongress, represented by @DomRoszak and Krzysztof Grabkowski, together with the Canada-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group, and attended by many distinguished guests from the diplomatic corps and public life, including @HelenaJaczek, Chair of the Canada-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group, @Rob_Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, @YasirNaqviCDN, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade, @KurtHolmanMP, Chair of the Canada-Nordic-Baltic-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group, @PeterFonsecaMP, @mflalonde, Chair of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, and many more!

Deeply grateful to everybody who fought hard for the release of Andrzej Poczobut. An unbreakable hero, he was held hostage by the regime in Belarus for simply telling the truth.
Congratulations to @donaldtusk, @NawrockiKn, @sikorskiradek, @PolandMFA!
And huge thanks to @POTUS, @johnpcoale, and @ChrisWelbySmith for doing tremendous work to release our heroes.
Last week, Minister of National Defence David J. McGuinty attended the ceremonial opening of Hangar 14 of the RCAF Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment. The renovated facility has been rededicated in honour of 🇵🇱-🇨🇦 aviator J. Żurakowski. https://t.co/TI5bTRIOvU

On this day in 1940 Joseph Stalin and 5 other members of the Soviet Politbureau, sign an order for the execution of 25,700 Polish intelligentsia, including 14,700 Polish POWs, in what will become known as the Katyn massacre. Never forget. 🇵🇱
Today marks four years since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Just as Poles welcomed Ukrainians into their homes in its aftermath, we continue to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian community in Canada & thank the Ukrainian people for their courage & resilience. 🇨🇦🇵🇱🤝🇺🇦
Poland is getting ready for a major nuclear build-out. But they aren't just looking for technology — they're looking for a strategic partner.
I’m in Warsaw today with Canadian industry to launch a bid for Team Canada CANDU nuclear technology to be the foundation of that partnership.
At a time of geopolitical instability, the value of CANDU has never been clearer: energy security, resilient supply chains, and deeper bilateral energy collaboration with a NATO ally.
Today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honour all the victims of this darkest moment in history. Our Embassy is present at Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum for the anniversary ceremony, standing in remembrance and solidarity.

Today we bid farewell to Jesse Flis - an outstanding Canadian parliamentarian of Polish heritage and a true friend of Poland.
During the funeral ceremony, a letter from @sikorskiradek, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs was read by the Consul of the Republic of Poland in Toronto, Marek Ciesielczuk.
The letter recalled MP Flis’s lifelong dedication to the cause of a free Poland, his meaningful support for the Solidarity movement, and his exceptionally close ties with the Polish-Canadian community (Polonia), which he served with heart and conviction.
Poland’s Ambassador to Canada, @WitoldDzielski, spoke yesterday with members of the late MP Flis’s family, conveying personal condolences and words of sympathy on behalf of Poland.
🇵🇱🤝🇨🇦 Jesse Flis leaves behind a legacy of public service, transatlantic friendship, and steadfast support for the values of freedom and solidarity. His memory will remain alive both in Canada and in Poland. 🕊️

EN:
Today, Poles in Canada and around the world celebrate their Independence Day and the restoration of Poland’s sovereignty.
Long live Poland!
🇵🇱 Today we celebrate Poland’s Independence Day.
On this day in 1918, Poland regained its sovereignty after 123 years of being erased from the maps - yet never from the hearts and minds of its people. ❤️
Through generations, Poles remained steadfast, cultivating national traditions, keeping hope alive and laying the foundation for a nation yet to be reborn.
⚔️ ✍️ 🎨 We honour all who fought for freedom - by sword, by pen, by brush, or "simply" by preserving their identity and language, even when doing so was persecuted. We are grateful to those whose courage, creativity, and perseverance sustained the dream of a free Poland. Many did not live to witness its rebirth, yet their legacy endures.
May we never take freedom for granted - it is through continuous effort that we preserve a just and free society. ✨
