Important long-term data from RCT in contaminated ventral hernia repair: Synthetic mesh ↓ recurrence (11.8% vs 23.6%) with no increase in late mesh complications at 5–10 years.

Robotic versus laparoscopic minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair: randomized clinical trial (the ROGER trial)

🤖 Robotic vs laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair — does robotics reduce pain?
• 🧪 Single-centre, patient- and investigator-blinded RCT (n=182) comparing TEP vs robotic TAPP (rTAPP)
• 🎯 Primary endpoint: pain while coughing 24h after surgery
• 📊 Pain scores: TEP 5 (IQR 2–7) vs rTAPP 4 (IQR 2–7) → no significant difference (P=0.431)
• ⚠️ Complication rates similar: 11% (TEP) vs 10% (rTAPP)
• ⏱️ Operating time longer with robotics: 80 vs 64 minutes (P<0.001)
• 🧠 Surgeon workload (NASA TLX) significantly lower with rTAPP
📌 Takeaway: Robotic repair did not reduce postoperative pain or complications but was associated with lower surgeon workload—at the cost of longer operating time.

On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the women contributing to research, innovation, and excellence in hernia surgery.
Here’s to the scientists, surgeons, and future leaders shaping what comes next.

No improvement in pain out to 6-months and higher recurrence and seroma rates w/ biological mesh. Again...
Maybe we need one more RCT to show biologics belong in the trash can?

✨The holidays are for unwinding and enjoying a well-earned break. We hope you find time to relax and reconnect with what matters most.
📣 #CSSOMembers: January brings the launch of a new multi-society member portal, designed to make managing your memberships easier than ever!
In laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (TEP or TAPP), biological mesh increases recurrence and seroma formation - with no clear benefit on pain or foreign body sensation

BIOLAP RCT: Use of biological mesh in laparoendoscopic inguinal hernia repair did not reduce postoperative pain and was associated with significantly higher recurrence and seroma rates compared with synthetic mesh. https://t.co/sc76DiqCmw
🚨 Hernia Alert: 6.4% of patients who have emergent hernia repair will need another within 10 years. Risk higher for women, socially vulnerable patients, open repairs, & for-profit hospitals
