Calgary, Alberta.
In a near-unanimous vote, city council has officially designated Saddlewood Drive in Calgary's Saddle Ridge community as the city's newest municipal landfill, citing this as a solution to the ongoing problem of illegal dumping along the roadway.
Ward 15 Councillor Priya Sharma says the move will streamline waste management operations in the northeast quadrant.
Sharma added that "as Calgary becomes more and more diverse, we must meet new challenges with new solutions, and that as we welcome newcomers to the city, we must adapt to accommodate them."
Fellow councillor Suhani Patel commented that "harsher fines do not work as it only forces people to deposit their refuse in rural areas or neighbouring communities.
This is about changing behavior through convenience." She continued, "No one should have to drive to the countryside to get rid of their household garbage and small construction waste."
The designation also includes considerations for an attached community lake.
City officials emphasized that the new site will include environmental monitoring to ensure responsible use.
