Studio Ghibli's founder called AI-generated animation “an insult to life itself” 👀

During a documentary, the Studio Ghibli legend was shown an experimental AI-generated CGI animation featuring unnatural, disturbing movements that its creators suggested could potentially be used for creatures in a video game.

Miyazaki was visibly unimpressed. He delivered a response that has continued circulating as AI-generated art becomes increasingly common: “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

Coming from the filmmaker behind Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service, the moment reflected a philosophy that runs throughout his work.

For Miyazaki, animation has never simply been about making images move.

It is about understanding life well enough to make those movements feel alive.
