Erosion is a natural process. To better understand erosion in areas of concern, like infrastructure or culturally significant locations, Cape Cod National Seashore scientists have been using terrestrial LiDAR technology to collect 3D data of the bluffs and dunes.
NPS/Rasmussen
LiDAR stands for "light detection and ranging” and works by bouncing laser beams off the surrounding environment and measuring how long it takes the beam to return. The result is a detailed 3D image that park scientists can use to examine how our coasts are changing.

Aircraft equipped with an RCAT would take off from a now defunct runway located in the woods of Wellfleet. The RCAT would then be rocket-launched off the aircraft at 0 to 60 mph within the first 30 feet, and then controlled remotely from the bluff. NPS Archives.
Last week, a man-made object washed up on Marconi Beach, and staff worked together to get it off the beach before it was swept away. Park historian Bill Burke examined the object and determined that it was the fuselage of a Remote Control Aerial Target (RCAT).
