It was great to see so many of our friends at the SEPC show and to welcome Ashley Berlinger and Craig Messmer to the Capespan Team.
Summer citrus season is just around the corner. Let’s connect!
Avoid the "bad apple" effect - The saying "one bad apple can spoil the bunch" is scientifically true! Bruise or damage apple release extra ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening of nearby fruit. Handle apples gently and remove any damaged ones to keep the rest fresh.
Variety matters- Some apples varieties naturally store better than others. Granny smith and Crisp Red apples, for example, have a longer shelf life compared to sifter varieties.
Store them in the fridge - Apples last much linger when kept cold, ideally in their original packaging in the crisper drawer. Adding a damp cloth to the crisper bin can help extend their freshness.
Know Your Pome Fruit: Forelle Pears 🍐
One of the most strikingly beautiful pear varieties, Forelle pears are instantly recognizable by their smooth yellow skin covered in vibrant red speckles.
In South Africa, Forelle pears are harvested from mid-February to early April, with a natural ripening period post-harvest to develop their signature flavor. Their long storage potential and export viability make them a key variety for international markets.
Unlike many pears, Forelle pears don’t change colour significantly when ripening, so the best way to tell if they’re ready is by gently pressing near the stem.
Forelle pears are known for their crisp texture when firm, gradually softening into a sweet, juicy bite when fully ripe. They’re perfect for fresh eating, cheese boards, poaching, and even roasting.
