Alright, I'm gonna start being vocal about it.
I've been writing a 3D Action platformer with Sharks characters!
There's lots of work to be done but I'm gonna be focusing on this project. I'll start posting some stuff soon.
I mean, not all of us. Many of us have studied reference for a long enough time that it's possible to draw things by memory. This is why I think it's important to study: so you DON'T have to constantly rely on reference... learn the anatomy and drawing is faster to realize
@Wriolutionary Exactly! I like to summarize it with volume because regardless of the style you go for there's always a way you can manipulate that. Even if it's colorless with no shading.
Except deliberately going for a flat artstyle ofcourse
@DepthMonger64 You can make a drawing that lacks perspective and anatomy fundamentals by suggesting volume and depth with a few lines. Adding c'est shadows, or adding extra lines where there would be some volume change helps that
If you're in "untalented valley" there's a chance it's because your art lacks the illusion of volume or depth depending on what you're trying to achieve!
As you learn anatomy and advanced fundamentals you start using more complexe shapes and it's harder to track its volume.
there is an artistic area where you are too skilled to be charmingly bad but not skilled enough to be unironically good. this is what I call the untalented valley
Add elements that goes around a given object to show its volume. Like a belt does around a character's wips. Or using a cell shadow to show that there's a bottom to the object
This helped my art a lot, I'm able to break perspective and anatomy rules while keepin it feeling right
Thanks for all the kind words and wisdom guys. I've made a @pickpock_game page. Be sure to hit a follow, it's gonna be easier for me to regroup all the gamedev stuff for Pickpock around there! I'm also looking to set up a Discord server soon!
Sharks, Squids and a lot of Trash!
We wrote a 3D Action Platformer where you play as Pickpock, an ocean trash cleaner who's forced to face an "unexpected" invasion (he caused it).
Follow to see us try and bring this project to life!
