A new @CDCMMWR study shows that people who reported always wearing masks or respirators in indoor public settings in California were less likely to test positive for #COVID19 compared with those who reported not wearing a face covering. Learn more. https://t.co/T8gaqiPHyI
For more on California Omicron and BA.2, great and timely updates from @UCSFDOM in this thread. Couple highlights: BA.2 may extend the tail of the surge but no current evidence of higher severity than BA.1; boosters really matter
1/ Welcome back to a COVID #UCSFMGR w/ local experts Drs @Rutherford_UCSF @SDoernberg @PCH_SF abt the latest Omicron surge & the changes in local & national policy. First, Dr. @Rutherford_UCSF will share the latest SF data & then expert panel w/ questions frm @Bob_Wachter to all
Chart of the day on how full vax + booster can keep you out of the hospital. In this study of >400K cases in LA County: with Omicron, risk of hospitalization is 23x higher for unvaxxed than full vax+booster, and 5.3x higher than full vax w/out booster. https://t.co/RSpGXkot3N
A) "Everyone will be exposed to Omicron"
B) "Everyone will get Omicron"
They're different. (A) promotes appropriate caution till surge ends: boost, N95, outdoor>indoor. (B) promotes counterproductive behavior as hospitals are overwhelmed.
Biggest difference: A is true. B is not.
5. projecting "an awful January" (yup. These case rates plus many, many providers out sick with COVID = incredibly hard for healthcare workers and those who need care rn) but a better February 🤞. And until then, stay safe😷💙. (3/3)
Five important takeaways from this great summary of current COVID data in the Bay (plus a plug to read the full chain): 1. low Covid hospitalizations in late Dec. have picked up post New Year - they weren't a permanent reflection of protection from our high vax rates (1/3)
Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 665
I haven’t done a SF update for a week – it’s a good time to catch up. Any impact of holiday gatherings should now be baked in, we all know scores of people with Covid, & hospitals are getting overwhelmed. So is SF’s high vax rate helping? (1/20)
2. ICU cases are still disproportionately unvaccinated 3. Case-to-hospitalization rate is MUCH better than last year's surge (combined effect of high vax rates and Omicron "mildness' in action) 4. there's a reasonable estimation that 5-10% of people are actively infected (2/3)
@lucienengelen 👏 Thanks @lucienengelen! And hey, not to commercialize on this, but if we have any takers: my organization (a nonprofit County-Organized Health System in the Bay Area) recruits for Fellows every year in the spring. Send brilliant folks our way to help make the safety net better!
...and just to add my voice to the chorus: everybody, come work in the public sector! The water's warm over here (and yeah, also full of tempests and occasionally sharks -- but you'll rarely end a day doubting that your swim made a real impact) #HIMSS21
Feeling the light from @annezinkmd's comments re: the public health revelations of the past year: "We need truly integrated data sharing (now), telehealth, and the ability to recruit and retain a workforce that is as diverse and brilliant as our nation" #HIMSS21
More from @annezinkmd: "We can have a lot of shiny tools, but if we don't have the people we can't function in public health." A recent MMRW showed higher PTSD among public health professionals even than frontline health workers 😳 How can we bolster this workforce?
"What if every HIT company established programs for their staff to do a fellowship in public health, to bring that innovation and energy to the field?" @annezinkmd#HIMSS21
Great insight from @innonurse: when it comes to tackling internal biases that are holding you back, traveling and learning about your field in other cultures and in other languages is great medicine. Language and communication are such powerful tools for reframing. #HIMSS21
Practical recommendations from @CarlaCartenPhD for enhancing trust in hc: develop a common vocabulary, deeply listen to barriers others share, practice (and train your org) on the courage and skills needed to dive into conversations about race; stay in learning mode #HIMSS21
So great seeing @innonurse (virtually) today leading a great conversation with @CarlaCartenPhD and Elisa Arespacochaga of @ahahospitals on culturally competent care and building trust in healthcare #HIMSS21
Hey #HIMSS21 - who else here is working on closing COVID19 vaccination gaps (particulary folks who serve Medicaid beneficiaries)?Let's talk! #healthequity#publichealth
@RaminDavidoff highlights the "watershed moment" for the hospital at home model, incl. this year's $100M investment by Mayo and Kaiser Permanente in the technology platform (Medically Home Group) powering KP's pilot of this model here in N. CA and Oregon #HIMSS21
