As with all things propaganda, there's truth there, but an ulterior motive. Not easy to see in this case.

The robber barons weren't nice people, but they firmly believed they should leave behind great works as befitted their stature. Giving was a part of their identity as Great Men. Which is different from Musk and Bezos.

@matthewstoller @RossBarkan Rockefeller started building the University of Chicago in 1890 when Standard Oil was all-powerful; no one was threatening it.

His foundation was set up later, during the Standard Oil lawsuit - which forced him to get a charter from NY state. The gift didn't help him in court.
