The Twelve Labours of Herakles can be understood as the Labours of the soul. Herakles does not merely conquer monsters. He conquers the forces within the mortal being that obstruct the soul's ascent towards the divine.

The Nemean Lion is the primal animal nature, which must be confronted directly and subdued by the higher will.

The Lernaean Hydra is the multiplicity of passions and desires which return stronger when merely suppressed, demanding purification at their very root.

The Ceryneian Hind is spiritual purity, pursued with patience and attained without violating what is sacred.

The Erymanthian Boar is the wild and selfish nature restrained by discipline and brought beneath the governance of the higher soul.

The Augean Stables are the accumulated impurities of the soul, cleansed not one by one, but by directing a purifying current through their depths.

The Stymphalian Birds are the multitude of disordered thoughts hidden within the soul, which must be brought into the open and overcome by disciplined intellect.

The Cretan Bull is the untamed force of passion, which must be subdued and brought beneath the mastery of the higher soul rather than destroyed.

The Mares of Diomedes are destructive impulses which consume their possessor until they themselves are mastered.

The Girdle of Hippolyta represents spiritual sovereignty, the power of the soul that has learned to govern itself.

The Cattle of Geryon are distant and divided powers which must be gathered and brought into harmony beneath the rule of the higher self.

The Golden Apples of the Hesperides are the fruits of higher knowledge, attained only after the soul has passed beyond the ordinary boundaries of mortal experience.

Finally, Herakles descends alive into Hades, confronts Cerberus without weapons, and returns victorious to the light. The final Labour is the soul's confrontation with death itself, a descent into its darkest depths from which it emerges unconquered.

Yet even the Twelve Labours are not the end of the Heraklean path. Upon Mount Oeta, the fire that consumes his mortal form becomes the image of final purification, in which mortality is cast away and divine life begins. Herakles is received among the Gods on Olympus and united with Hebe, divine Youth.

The Heraklean path is one of continual mastery and purification. Through it, the soul brings its lower nature into order, attains higher knowledge, and passes unconquered through the realm of death, culminating in apotheosis.
