✨Our state history✨

Minnesota did not become a state until 1858, just 3 years prior to the Civil War which broke-out in 1861.  On that day, Minnesota's first Governor, Alexander Ramsey, was in Washington DC meeting w/ Lincoln when the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter marking the beginning of the Civil War. Ramsey immediately offered 1,000 men to the Union army, making him the very first governor to do so.

The 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment was all-volunteer men who served 3-year commitments.

During combat actions, fighting to save the union & free the slaves, they sustained massive casualties at the Battle of Bull Run (20%), Antietam (28%), & a staggering 82% at the Battle of Gettysburg where the regiment's most famous actions occurred on the second day of the battle.

The 1st MN was outnumbered, 3 or 4 to one, by the Confederates & charged them in a suicide mission to protect the Union line & give Union reinforcements time to arrive.

The 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment's 82% casualty rate still stands as the largest loss by any surviving U.S. military unit, in a single day's engagement, in United States history.

~1819- Fort Snelling founded
~1858- MN statehood
~1893- flag adoption (first 35 years after statehood we did not have a state flag, finally got it for 1893 Chicago World's Fair).

~19 gold stars arranged in clusters forming a 5-pointed-star symbolizing Minnesota as the 19th state admitted to the union after the original 13 states. The very top star is bigger than the others to represent the North Star.

~Wreath of pink & white Lady Slippers (Moccasins)- state flower.
~3 Norway Pines (state tree) for the 3 pine regions:
St. Croix, Lake Superior, & Mississippi River.

~Saint Anthony Falls, also known as Owámniyomni, holds deep spiritual significance for the Dakota. The falls are considered a sacred site, a place of spiritual power, & connection to the natural world. The Dakota performed ceremonies & offerings at the falls, respecting its power & recognizing its life-giving properties. The falls were a natural resting & trade point along the Mississippi between Dakota & Anishinaabe/Ojibwe peoples.

The DFL Trifecta erased our entire state history when they controlled our state gov't in 2023-2024.
