Of course the intended message of the emperor‘s new clothes is a moral about vanity and pride and conformity and the courage to say what’s true, but you should notice about that story that saying the thing out loud is in some sense what makes it real for everybody.

If I were ever in the unlikely position of trying to obtain or consolidate power, I would be very careful about what I let the people around me say (and therefore think).

A minor version of this is that while we like to have fun with our kids, I won’t tolerate insults or name calling or other kinds of disrespectful joking around about me or my wife. We are authority figures in their life and they should regard us as such.
