🇺🇸 New: Colorado congressional candidate Melat Kiros has been endorsed by New York Democratic nominees Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez.

Kiros, an Ethiopian-born immigrant who moved to the U.S. as a child, is a former attorney and current PhD student at the University of Colorado Boulder. She was fired by law firm Sidley Austin in November 2023 after refusing to remove an open letter defending criticism of Israel and supporting pro-Palestinian student protesters.

She is now running as a Democratic Socialist to unseat longtime Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District.

Kiros thanked Chevalier and Valdez, saying they share a vision of universal healthcare, affordable college, and “where the people have the power.”

AOC: I actually think the more important advice that I would give would be to my incumbent colleagues, which is: you will create a self-fulfilling prophecy by deciding who these young women are before you’ve met them.

And if you are already panicking and sending little messages in your group chats about how these people need to be reined in, tamped down, and shown their place, you are creating the antagonistic dynamic that we do not need.

These are two young, talented, intelligent women who got elected against all odds, against millions of dollars. Perhaps there is something we can learn from them.
