The French conducted nuclear tests at the Mururoa Atoll in French Polynesia, starting in 1966. This uninhabited atoll, located about 700 miles from Tahiti, was ceded to France in 1964. The first test took place on July 3, 1966, and continued until 1996. Initially, the tests were conducted above ground, but later moved underground after 1975. In response to international concerns, more powerful blasts were carried out under the lagoon at Fangataufa Atoll, south of Mururoa.
Testing was temporarily suspended in 1992 but resumed in 1995, despite opposition from the French public and the antinuclear movement in French Polynesia. The last nuclear test in the South Pacific took place in January 1996. In 1996, France signed the protocols of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Rarotonga).
After the final test, military and civilian facilities related to the nuclear testing were dismantled. The Mururoa and Fangataufa atolls were restored to a more natural state, with only a few military personnel remaining to monitor the test sites periodically.
