It is bad practice to prescribe antibiotics for every case of acute diarrhea . Acute diarrhea is usually viral and self-limiting and requires no antibiotics.
These are the indications for prescribing antibiotics
1. Bloody or mucoid stool
2. High grade fever
3. Numerous episodes > 6 episodes per day
4. Background immunosuppression
5. Symptoms persisting beyond 2 days
AVOID THE BAD PRACTICE OF PRESCRIBING ANTIBIOTICS FOR EVERY CASE OF ACUTE DIARRHEA.
