๐ Keep Calm and Remove On: https://t.co/5DYVuAVJ64 2024 Year in Reviewย ๐
๐ The https://t.co/5DYVuAVJ64 2024 Year in Review is now out, in which we analyze the major trends in the durable carbon removal market.
Here are some key highlights:
๐ Durable CDR purchases grew 78% to nearly 8 million tonnes from 2023
๐ Deliveries went up by 120% to 318.6K tonnes, with biochar representing 86% of volume
๐ณ BECCS was the top method by sales, with the top 3 deals in equalling 4.8M tonnes
๐ธ DACCS companies raised $369M, while BiCRS came a close second with $203M investment
๐ฒThe weighted average price per tonne decreased to $320
๐ No. of unique purchasers only grew by 7% to 216

Will 2025 be the breakthrough year for #CarbonCapture?
What we're expecting in 2025 (global take):
โข The focus switches from discussing the increased project pipeline to Final Investment Decisions (FIDs). These will break records with 500 projects globally working towards FIDs in 2025.
โข The operational capacity of stored CO2 sees the largest annual increase to date (from 94 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa).
โข Governments keep boosting incentives - subsidies, tax credits, and contracts for difference (CfDs).
โข With over 600 companies involved in at least one CCUS project in the planning or operational development stages, strategic partnerships should proliferate, bolstering experience, skillsets and access to capital.
โข A growing number of companies have their own #CCUS targets. 2025 will show how well on track they will be to deliver.
โข Cross-border CO2 transport deals proliferate. Following the first wave of agreements signed in Europe, Japan and South Korea are expected to lead the charge in Asia in 2025 with export deals for storage with Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia.

Compensation, contribution, procurement... oh my!
Currently, the leading use of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is in the voluntary carbon markets as a means of compensating for emissions.

So we spent some time reviewing them all and came up with this overview๐ What CDR is used for (left) is grouped by how it is achieved (right). The relative widths are based on estimates of how much CDR could be deliverable by that use case from now until 2050.
For a more thorough examination current CDR uses and what policy should be used to increase the market, see our recent publication ๐ https://t.co/9Wtoo8jj6m

๐ข A call for supporting carbon removals in the next EU mandate
Carbon Gap is joined by 44 other organisations in writing to Climate Commissioner-designate Wopke Hoekstra ahead of his confirmation hearing in the European Parliament urging him to adopt a set of policies to support a sustainable scale-up of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in the next EU mandate.
Here are our 4 key recommendations:
๐ฏ Set separate targetsย for emissions reductions and carbon removals in the revision of the Climate Law
๐ Boost CDR fundingย to scale up both early- and later-stage technologies
๐ Provide clarity for buyers of CDR in the Green Claims Directive, strengthening the integrity of climate claims
๐ Create stable demandย for carbon removals through a compliance market and long-term policy support
Carbon removals are vital for reaching net zero. With the new European Commission being formed, this is a pivotal moment to ensure carbon removals become a pillar in Europeโs fight against climate change.
