In 1914 a Scottish doctor offered the War Office a fully staffed hospital for the front. She was told to go home and sit still.
Her name was Elsie Inglis. She was an Edinburgh surgeon, a suffragist, and by then in her fifties, and she had come with a serious proposal: complete medical units, staffed entirely by women, funded by women, ready to go. The official reply has never been forgotten. My good lady, go home and sit still.
She did not go home. She took her offer to the French, and they said yes. Then the Serbians said yes. Then the Russians said yes. The Scottish Women's Hospitals ended up running fourteen units across Europe, staffed almost entirely by women, and they treated tens of thousands of wounded men in conditions that broke stronger organisations.
In Serbia she stayed through a typhus epidemic that was killing hundreds a day, and when the country was overrun she refused evacuation and was captured, running her hospital under enemy occupation until she was repatriated. Then she went straight back out, to Russia this time.
By 1917 she was dying of cancer and hiding it. She held on long enough to bring her Serbian units safely out of Russia, stood on the deck at Newcastle to see her staff and her men ashore, and died the next day.
Serbia has never forgotten her. There are streets and memorials there bearing her name to this day. Britain took rather longer.
She was told to sit still, and instead she built fourteen hospitals across a burning continent and came home to die on her feet.
The Scottish Bloodline🏴🩸
Whoever came up with this deserves a standing ovation. 😂😂😂
“Stop the bungs” with Count Binface standing on the beach while Nigel Farage rows away in a boat full of cash… satire doesn’t get much better than this.
Why we are contractually obliged to support Norway this Saturday 🇳🇴🏴
Since we don't have a choice in the matter, we’ve prepared this official guide to ensure every Scot is fully informed of our historical, genetic, and meteorological obligations before kick-off.
Failure to comply may result in Norway asking for their Christmas tree back, and frankly we cannot afford our own.
They call it GB News to make it sound patriotic.
It’s owned by Australians.
It’s based in the Dubai tax haven
It’s managed by New Zealanders.
The only British bit are the fools watching.
I will accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.
It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better.
But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him.
