Head of BMA South West - leading our union & Member Relations team in the SW - representing and advocating for doctors and Medical Students on behalf of the BMA
Union membership is growing again.
👥 6.6m public sector workers in unions in 2025
📈 Up nearly 200,000 year-on-year https://t.co/SQJx6Wk7ck
People see the value of standing together.
Doctors can currently join the BMA free for 3 months.

We’ve observed an increase in misleading communications from employers regarding Time Out Of Training (TOOT) in the run up to this round of strikes, some intimidatory.
Important message for resident doctors on TOOT!👇🏼
- Keep your portfolio up to date 🗂️
- Strike hard ✊🏼
✊Our members at @TheBMA are back out on the picket line and they won’t back down.
They’re striking for a better pay deal for themselves and their colleagues. It’s time for BMA management to listen & put an improved offer on the table.
Enough is enough. No more pay erosion.
#FairPayattheBMA
Couldn’t agree more. It’s beyond ironic that the BMA are expecting their own staff to accept pay erosion and sub inflation pay increases. This dispute can and should be resolved, then we can focus on supporting doctors pay.
Saddened to be forced to take another day of staff strike action today. No management offer, no negotiations and no progress.
Desperate to get on with my job and be fairly paid for my experience and expertise.
This is a terrible position for LNC Chairs to have been put in by the BMA - that they must cross the picket line of the very staff who dedicate their working lives to support them and represent their best interests at work 2/
🚨UPDATE ON FURTHER @GMBLondonRegion STRIKE DATES
@TheBMA staff are taking strike action on 30th April & 2nd May 2026 - coinciding with LNC Chairs & Med Students Conferences
The untenable approach of BMA CEO and Board is denying BMA members their conferences

Our members at the BMA made their voices heard yesterday and they are not done yet.
Watch @Andrew_Jordan_ speaking to Sky News about why BMA staff are taking action.
Further strike action is planned for the 18th of April. BMA staff are not going anywhere. 🪧

Didn’t think I’d find myself agreeing with a telegraph journo this morning.
The threat is indeed absurd because it’s a more of a threat against the British public, who need more doctors.
Reminder: this is all happening whilst Starmer presides over >7.2m people on waiting lists.
@ShazBMA@TheBMA@GMB_union@Andrew_Jordan_ Absolutely Shazia - what a shame we have been put in this position with a 2.75% offer. So many more important things we should be doing not least organising RD strike action and supporting consultant and SAS doctors in their pay campaign to oppose their derisory 3.5% offer.
🔴 LIVE from the picket line.
GMB London Regional Organiser Donna Thomas is outside BMA headquarters today, where BMA staff are striking for fair pay.
Since 2012 their pay has been eroded by nearly 17%.
Enough is enough.
#MembersFirst#FairPayattheBMA
Since 2012, BMA staff have seen their pay eroded by nearly 17%.
Today they’re on the picket line, and 96% of them voted to be there, on an 80% turnout.
This isn’t a protest. It’s a mandate.

🚨BREAKING🚨
@TheBMA staff vote overwhelmingly to take strike action in @GMBLondonRegion ballot
‘Are you prepared to take part in strike action?’
Turnout: 80.18%
Yes: 96.02%
This is a clear signal that BMA staff will not accept yet another below inflation pay award.
We are aware of a number of doctors who have had their return travel to the UK disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Our view is any affected doctor should receive paid special leave if they are delayed in returning to work due to the conflict.
Members who have been affected or are being denied paid special leave by their employer should get in touch with us - https://t.co/27QvugrMrE
Despite years of studying and training resident doctors are facing an unemployment crisis.
This year, more than 30,000 doctors applied for just 10,000 specialty training places.
Fixing the specialty training crisis is crucial – for doctors and patients https://t.co/BAOQX3c1Es
Due to the dangerous lack of planning and action taken by Obstetrics at QMC and The City Hospital in Nottingham, we are forced to accept the derogations: 1x resident (Sat 26 July) and 3x resident doctors tomorrow (Sun 27 July). 1/2
Protecting patient safety during strikes has always been a priority to the BMA, however the responsibility to ensure staffing falls upon trusts. If there are continued examples of this behaviour, a CQC report will be submitted.
This is why Resident doctors in England are taking a stand against the Government - it’s time to pay us what we're worth.
Support us on the picket lines 📢 25 to 30 July
