A 2x2 map of storytelling, which can be used to differentiate compelling characters from boring ones. Using Marvel superheroes as examples, I suggest that characters that take a journey through the different boxes in the grid are compelling. Characters that don't are boring.
@SpencrGreenberg Your sample groups come from people with internet access and social media presence. Does this obscure outcomes for people more at the fringes of society?
@robinhanson Yes, but it’s rarely “easier for someone to see”. Typically a lack of defense, or better yet counter attack, is seen as admission of guilt. Silence works best when the opp has low credibility and the room is small enough for you to read it.
@DavidDeutschOxf Assuming anyone who disagrees w/ us is anti-Semite destroys the means of correcting our inevitable misconceptions. I don’t assume you’re anti-Persian.
So Israel’s attack was not preemptive because “proxies”. Is this special pleading or do you apply that logic to every nation?
@DavidDeutschOxf An Iranian attack. But I’m unclear why you ask, because Israel’s stated rationale assumes the attack was preemptive, to “preempt” the nuclear threat and undermine the regime.
Are these reasons morally open to any country?
@DavidDeutschOxf Agreed, assuming I correctly guess your meaning. Political correctness (wokeness) on the right = overprotection of the powerful (gods, taboos, sacred books), vs. overprotection of the powerless (minorities, etc). Whereas the former has the outsized impact on history. This right?
@ThomasWillett9@jk_rowling Hey Thomas, do you summarize your concrete policy views somewhere for a curious observer? e.g., medical interventions for kids, etc.
@Culture_Crit How do we know the Megiddo Mosaic says “God Jesus Christ” when the Greek is so abbreviated? “Θω ΙΥ Χω” when the full words would “θEΩ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΩ”. Are we assuming this is a nomina sacra abbreviation?
@nntaleb The 2nd cheapest wine on menus is actually a scam designed for suckers, a badly kept secret in the industry. Restaurants pick 2 similar cheap wines - they mark up 1 of the 2 knowing clueless patrons will talk themselves into “upgrading” to the 2nd cheapest. 😄
@elonmusk Is this why all new X accounts get auto-spammed by an endless stream of Elon fever tweets?
Why bother censoring different opinions when your algo can make them all disappear right? 😂
Charisma always the most important/impactful
Charisma = giving people a perspective so subtly that they believe it’s their own
Charisma = psychological empire building
Roughly divide people into 3 classes: low, mid, high. Different classes might emphasize different status markers.
4 kinds of status: Looks/charisma, Money, School/job, Taste/grace
In next 3 polls, say which kind of status matters more to which class.
@robinhanson At first glance the wild competency disparity between politics and business should be shocking to anyone who has worked in high stakes corporate life. The mystery disappears when you see the function of politicians, unlike most C suite peeps, is to conceal power not wield it.
@robinhanson No. True killers don’t need to be *given* power, they acquire and expand it on their own. A ruthless system of competition *between* fellow killers for normie approval is the only way to balance their inherent talent for getting shit done with their inherent desire for tyranny.
