I told the new boss I didn’t know if we were ready because we hadn’t taken the battalion to the field for two years. He said, “ it’s your job to ensure we are ready.” I replied, “then we are going to the field next week.”

Hallelujah. Quick story: as XO of Midshipmen assigned to a Marine training center, one got in trouble (surprise). I could’ve thrown the book at him, but instead I convinced him to put a positive light on the situation and “volunteer” for weekend duty thus helping his peers. Of course, USNA XO called me and said “only the CO can take away liberty”. The MIDN returned to the USNA to have the book thrown at him. So depressing!
