What happens to the ductus arteriosus when you give dexamethasone for evolving BPD?
Phoenix Plessas-Azurduy is a doctoral candidate at McGill University conducting a prospective longitudinal study using serial echocardiography to track cardiovascular changes in preterm infants receiving DEXA. In 53 patients managed under a conservative PDA policy, 95% with an unrestricted duct at DEXA start reached complete closure or a restrictive pattern by 36 weeks. Median PDA size hit zero by day 14 on DEXA.
We have been using this medication for years. The echo data is only now catching up.
NORDIC-SPEC is also looking at LV function, lung ultrasound scores, and autonomic regulation at each time point. If you have ever wondered whether DEXA is doing more to the cardiovascular system than you thought, this episode is worth your time.

Twice a year, the Barrington–Janvier family brings together friends, family, and an incredible group of musicians for an evening of music and generosity. Stepped a little outside comfort zone and had the pleasure of singing alongside this amazing group.
