Flying back home from Darwin after a successful 2- day Postural Care Course for a lovely group of therapists. It was great working with you all, please stay in touch and spread the word on the importance of postural care for people with significant movement problems!
Marr and Nicholls (2018) for people with PMLD reasonable adjustments may cover their methods of communication, how the person indicates pain as well as issues around postural care and diet whilst in hospital.
People with significant movement problems are at risk of developing changes in body shape, often referred to deformities, we prefer the prefer to refer to them as body shape distortions #posturalcare#scoliosis#hipdysplasia
People at risk of developing body shape distortions may have significant movement problems from birth, after a serious traumatic event (injury), or a (degenerative) disease #posturalcare#scoliosis#hipdysplasia
Body shape distortion develops often very slowly, over month and years and initially go unnoticed. Regular monitoring and reliable and validated measurement of body shape is key #GIoBS#posturalcare#scoliosis#hipmigration
We often see the development of severe body shape distortion in children with CP, MD, and other neuromuscular diseases and syndromes. Almost all of these children are born without body shape distortions #posturalcare#scoliosis#hipdysplasia
@Steven_AK@KorakakisV@PeteOSullivanPT@kieranosull@RodWhiteley@RoulaKotsifaki I work with people with severe physical disabilities and I can confirm that prolonged poor postures over a 24 hour period lead to contracture, deformities and functional/ QoL deficits, under the force of gravity. How long ‘prolonged’ is, is not clear yet.
