They come with children, with friends who vote differently, with hearts already tired from headlines. When the stage becomes another battleground, the room stops being a room and becomes a test. Neutrality is not cowardice here; it is hospitality. It is the decision to protect a rare public space where joy is allowed to be the main event.
That does not mean artists have no convictions. It means they have chosen not to conscript every paying stranger into their convictions. There is a difference between having a private conscience and turning a sold-out stadium into a referendum. One is integrity. The other is capture.
The harder question is whether we still believe any shared space can exist without first declaring a side. If the answer is no, then we have already decided that art itself must become another instrument of the culture war. That is a poorer world—not because politics is unimportant, but because not every human gathering has to be about it.
A concert that stays a concert is a small act of mercy. It says: tonight you may simply be a person who likes songs. That used to be enough. It should still be.
