@meaganelinski The failure was defined in a sharp rise in friction as cold welding took place. The substrate is a iron foil to be as close as possible to the real life application of a rolling bearing. As the graphite layer is rather thick (4 µm) I don't think the substr. plays a crucial role.

@HartkampRemco So far, no study about the interplay between lubricant thickness and humidity has been made as we wanted to focus on one layer thickness and investigate it in detail. Of course a broader study on this matter could be of interest, thank you very much for the suggestion.
@HartkampRemco Thank you very much. Indeed a thinner graphite layer was not durable enough and would have called for the need of relubrication after a while. The humidity experiments were conducted with a thickness of 4 µm.
