@TradovateProp i spend a lot of time screenshotting bugs with your trading platform that you have yet to fix for nearly a year now, with over 16 instances on wednesday… https://t.co/NZwvnWngvS
Great question and yes, this is a known limitation of OHLCV backtesting from what I've read. Also, long winded answer but it's exciting to talk to someone with genuine questions!!!!
The intra-bar sequence problem: if both TP and SL are hit within the same bar, you can't know which came first without tick data. It's real and I've been trying to figure out it's impact on the data.
Why I believe it's minimal here:
1. The primary exit is a 3.0x ATR trailing stop, not TPs. The backtest data showed TPs barely get hit, the trail exits almost everything first. So the TP vs SL same bar conflict rarely occurs.
2. The optimal timeframe is 10m. The signal logic runs on 10m bars where each bar represents 10 minutes of price action. At that resolution, same bar TP+SL conflicts are much rarer than on daily bars.
3. Entries are at candle close (confirmed, no repainting). Not mid bar assumptions.
4. Commission and slippage are NOT included, which I'll note when publishing. Subtracting ~$5 round trip per trade still leaves the edge intact.
Is it perfect? No. Tick level backtesting would be more precise. But for a trailing stop dominant strategy on 10m bars, the OHLCV resolution is sufficient to validate the edge exists. The out of sample results holding up on unseen data confirms that
Appreciate the real question and will be doing even deeper analysis on this too since it's a new area for me to explore
@TraderYush yeah, 20% consistency isn’t trading. it’s just a game. 40-50% is reasonable so people aren’t yoloing news. 20% consistency makes a live account way more attractive
